Acer Aspire 5755G 2634G75Bnks C004 Bnbs C004 Review notebook

Acer Aspire 5755G-2634G75Bnks/C004

Acer Aspire 5755G is a general-purpose laptop that packs a "Sandy Bridge" Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA Optimus graphics into a sleek, relatively lightweight shell. Its an all-round home machine, suitable for gaming and getting work done.
The Aspires solid case mixes a variety of grey and black plastic textures. The glossy lid is a fingerprint trap, as is the screen bezel. The matte silver-grey keyboard surround is smooth to the touch and makes a comfortable wrist rest, especially when combined with the sunken keyboard. The 15.6-inch screen has good solid hinges, which drop it slightly below the laptops body, but this also leaves it feeling slightly over-balanced when it’s on your lap. Solid is also a good word for the 2.5kg weight, although the build quality is only average.

MSI Wind U135

The 10in MSI Wind U135 heralds the companys first mainstream netbook offering based on Intels new Pine Trail Atom chips, which are supposed to be more power-efficient than the older Atom processors.

The MSI Wind U135 is available in two colours: glossy blue and silver. Our review sample had a glossy silver screen lid which didnt attract a glaring amount of fingerprints.

Prop open the screen lid to reveal the MSI Wind U135s two-toned silver-on-black colour scheme, and it looks quite good. Like the Wind U120, the Wind U135 appears to be wedge-shaped, owing to its six-cell battery bulge - this actually aids typing on the netbook while its perched on a flat surface. Build quality was largely acceptable, but we felt the Wind U135 was slightly top-heavy. It weighs a decent 1.3kg with the included six-cell battery.

Its 10.1in LED-backlit glossy screen supports a 1024x600 pixel resolution - lesser compared to larger screen-sized netbooks from Asus, Acer, or Benq. Despite being smaller, we had no complaints from its quality: the screen is evenly lit and offers good horizontal viewing angles. Whether its reading text or watching movies, the MSI Wind U135s screen didnt disappoint. However, its onboard speakers werent up to mark - part of the reason was its placement under the front edge. But plug in a pair of headphones, and the audio is nice and easy on the ears.

The keyboard sports isolated, chiclet-styled keys, and the key spacing is wider on the MSI Wind U135s keyboard compared to the Wind U120 and the Wind12 U210. Alphanumeric keys are okay, but Control, Alt, Shift keys are tiny; typing is fine once you get used to the tiny form factor, but we recommend test driving the keyboard before buying. The touchpad has a hint of texture and a breeze to work with, but the single-strip mouse button is a bit of a pain.

The most notable (and hotly anticipated!) hardware debut on the MSI Wind U135 is undoubtedly the new Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz processor. Unlike the older Atom N270 and N280 chips, the newer single core N450 packs in the processor, graphics chip, and memory controller on a single die - thereby reducing its power footprint. Paired with the processor is just 1GB of DDR2 RAM (disappointing) and a 250GB hard drive.

Onboard graphics is handled by Intel GMA 3150, which is slightly better than the older Intel GMA 500. The MSI Wind U135 comes with three USB ports, multicard reader, VGA-out, and twin audio jacks. It doesnt come with Gigabit Ethernet, but supports Draft-N Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity. This is also the first netbook weve encountered which bundles in Windows 7 Starter Edition operating system. Theres a 1.3Mp webcam and microphone recessed on the Wind U135s top screen bezel, and they come in handy for voice chats.

So how does the new Intel Atom processor fare in terms of performance? In terms of raw, number-crunching tasks, the newer processor is marginally better than Intel Atom Z520-enabled netbooks weve seen from Asus, Acer and Benq. But performance is nearly the same compared to Atom N270 and N280 processors, as is evident from our initial benchmarks (Were still putting it through WorldBench 6 at the time of writing this). Disappointingly, the MSI Wind U135 cant handle smooth, stutter-free 720p High-def media playback. However, we had no trouble browsing the web, listening to music, and working on Office productivity suite - all at the same time.

But there is definitely an improvement in terms of battery life, as promised by Intel. The MSI Wind U135 etched 4 hours 15 minutes in our synthetic battery test, at full screen brightness and high-performance preset - significantly better than the Wind U120s 2 hours 50 minutes. Easily expect close to 7 hours of browsing the Web on a power-efficient battery preset. Dont forget, all benchmarks on the Wind U135 were done on Windows 7, unlike previous netbooks which had the less resource-hungry Windows XP to contend with.

MSI Wind U135 Verdict

The 10in MSI Wind U135 heralds the companys first mainstream netbook offering based on Intels new Pine Trail Atom chips, which are supposed to be more power-efficient than the older Atom processors.
Specifications

Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz processor; 1GB DRAM; 10in widescreen, 1024x600-pixel LED-backlit; Windows 7 Starter Edition; embedded 1.3Mp webcam; 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi; 3.G WiMax module; 250GB hard drive; six-cell battery; 1.2kg

The MSI Wind U135 definitely shines in terms of battery life and comes with Microsofts brand new Windows 7 operating system. Compared to larger 11.6in, 12in netbooks, the Wind U135s 10in form factor is definitely smaller - screen, keyboard, touchpad - this could be a curse or boon, depending on your requirements. However, the Wind U135 is just your average netbook in terms of performance (no quantum leaps in the future to speak of), and a step back in terms of overall form factor. Buy this if you want a netbook running on Windows 7 and the extra hard drive space.

  • Processor: 1.20GHz Intel Core 2 Duo L7100 (800Mhz FSB, 4MB Cache)
  • Graphics: Intel X3100
  • Screen: 13.3-inch WXGA+ (1440 x 900, 300 nit) LED backlit display
  • Memory: 2GB (up to 4GB configurable)
  • Storage: 64GB SSD
  • Optical Drive: Ultra-thin DVD Burner
  • Wireless and Communications: Intel 4965AGN (802.11 a/b/g/n wi-fi), BlueTooth 2.0 EDR, Intel UWB, GPS, Verizon WWAN (EV-DO)
  • Battery: 6-cell Li-Polymer extended life battery (3-cell Li-Polymer battery available and multi-bay extended life 3-cell battery)
  • Ports: 3 USB 2.0 ports, Monitor out port, AC adapter, headphone/line-out, microphone/line-in, Gigabit Ethernet

  • Input: Full sized keyboard, trackpoint navigation, touchpad, fingerprint reader
  • Operating System: Windows XP Professional (Windows Vista available in various flavors)
  • Other Features: Integrated web camera
  • Warranty: 1-year
Conclusion

The ThinkPad X300 is a premium product thats worth the price if you need the features it offers. The X300s excellent portability, abundance of wireless options, built-in optical drive, SSD advantage, great screen, fantastic keyboard, and second-to-none build quality all add up to a notebook thats easy to recommend to business users who consider a notebook to be an important part of their success with work. Its certainly not the right notebook for everyone, the 64GB storage limit, under powered processor and high price immediately eliminates most consumers from even considering the X300. We would have like to have seen such things as an SD card reader, docking capability and an ExpressCard or PC slot. You cant have it all though, and the ThinkPad X300 is much more practical than the pretty but port challenged MacBook Air, and so the X300 gets the Editors Choice recommendation that we couldnt rationalize giving to the MacBook Air. Bravo to Lenovo, and we hope that they push this 13.3" slim form factor more and find ways to bring the pricing down.

Pros

  • Under 1-inch thick, the thinnest ThinkPad ever
  • Light weight and easy for carrying around in a bag
  • Superb build quality and feel, nice design touches added
  • Built-in optical drive for such a thin notebook is a rarity
  • Good performance in normal business tasks, very fast bootup with the SSD
  • Very bright screen for easy viewing

Cons

  • No SD card reader
  • No expansion dock capability, USB based port replicator only
  • No ExpressCard or PC card slot
  • Starting price of $2,500 is out of range for many people

Alienware Aurora m9700

The Alienware Aurora m9700 is a desktop replacement style laptop with a 17" widescreen LCD. Almost every facet of this laptop is customizable from the paint to the components, through Alienware during configuration, or aftermarket depending on what kind of a machine you need. With the capability of configuring dual Nvidia graphics cards, it is capable of handling a lot. With a base price of $1599, the 9700 is comparably priced to many of its competitors, though the price hits the ceiling at around $5000!

Overview

First and foremost, Alienware makes a very attractive computer. From the glowing alien head to the high gloss paint, you know you have a beast on your hands. As I said, almost every component is upgradable. Here is the configuration I opted for, the total including tax and shipping came up to just shy of $2400. Although I must say charging $100 for shipping is just ridiculous.

  • Processor: AMD Turion 64 Mobile ML40 2.2GHz 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache
  • Operating System (Office software not included): Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium - Without Remote Control or TV Tuner
  • Chassis: 17" WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD with Clearview Technology - Conspiracy Blue
  • Motherboard: Alienware NVIDIA Mobile SLi Chipset
  • Memory: 1GB Dual Channel DDR SO-DIMM at 400MHz - 2 x 512MB
  • System Drive: Single Drive Configuration - 80GB Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s 5,400 RPM w/ NCQ & 8MB Cache
  • Optical Drive: 8x Dual Layer CD-RW/DVD+-RW w/ Nero Software
  • Video/Graphics Card: Dual 256MB NVidia GeForce™ Go 7900 GS - SLI Enabled
  • Sound Card: High-Definition Audio with surround sound
  • Wireless Network Card: Internal 802.11b/g WiFi Card
  • Communications: Integrated 10/1000Mb Gigabit Ethernet & 56K V.92 Modem
  • Bluetooth: Integrated Bluetooth Device
  • Primary Battery: Alienware M9700 12-cell Lithium-Ion Smart Battery Pack
  • Warranty: 1-Year AlienCare Toll-Free 24/7 Phone Support w/ Onsite Service
  • AlienRespawn: Alienware Respawn Recovery Kit
  • Alienware Extras: Alienware Mousepad
  • Alienware Extras: AlienInspection - Exclusive Integration and Inspection - $100 Value - FREE!
  • Free Alienware T-Shirt: Free Alienware T-Shirt - Black

Reasons for Buying

I am going to be a freshman in college this coming fall, and I was in need of a new laptop. I had always wanted to get an Alienware, and I figured this was the best time to get one. I have always been a gamer, so naturally I wanted to get a gaming laptop. Alienwares brand name has always been associated with gaming, and it looks really cool!

Build and Design

Alienware M9700 in Conspiracy Blue (view large image)

As I said, the 9700 is a desktop replacement, so plan on being tethered to a power-cord. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but portability is an issue at just over 13 lbs. The build quality on this laptop is top notch. It feels very solid all around, but especially on the keyboard. There is absolutely no flex, and the keys have a very nice feel. The screen is held up nice and tightly, with absolutely no droop.

Lid view with the iconic Alien head (view large image)

The design of the 9700 is stunning. The glossy paint resembles that of a car, and might even need some wax in the future! I love the glowing alien head, it lets everybody know what youre packing. The accent rubber grips are also very sporty looking, giving a nice contrast to the conspiracy blue color. All in all, I would say Alienware hit a homerun with the design of this laptop.

Notice the glossy black finish around the screen (view large image)

When you open up the bottom of this laptop, you are greeted with an impressive view of all the components. That is the beauty that defines Alienware from other manufacturers, you can actually access everything easily to upgrade yourself.

A look at the internals of the M9700 (view large image)

Processor and Performance

One disappointment is that the 9700 has no option for the Turion X2. Dual cores allow much better multitasking capability. Since I dont do much multitasking, that was not a concern in my decision, but it might be for others. With dual Nvidia 256MB graphics cards, the processor is going to be the bottleneck in this system.

In my use thus far, I have encountered no problems with speed or bottlenecking while running multiple programs.

For those of you interested in gaming performance, below are some benchmarks of how the M9700 performed in running Doom 3, F.E.A.R and Quake 3:

Keyboard and Touchpad

One of my few complaints on the 9700 is the touchpad. It is painted the same glossy color as the chassis, therefore making tracking more difficult than I would like. For just Internet surfing and other easy tasks it is fine, but gaming is impossible. I have a Logitech G5 gaming mouse that I use, so the touchpad will only be used on the go for me.

View of the keyboard and touchpad (view large image)

Being a desktop replacement, the keyboard boasts a full numeric pad, a nice feature for gaming. It is very comfortable to use, and the chassis underneath your hands remains cool, a tribute to the excellent cooling system employed in this laptop. There are buttons at the top of the keyboard for use with media (play, stop, skip, pause, etc...) a handy feature.

Screen / Resolution

Like I said, I am somewhat of a pixel junkie, so the higher the resolution the better. Alienware delivers with one of the best looking screens I have seen. With a native resolution of 1920 x 1200, there is certainly a lot of real estate to be had. I was originally woried about a dead pixel or two in this massive screen, but there is not one to be found. Alienware does have an excellent dead pixel policy though. The high gloss can be difficult to see in direct sunlight, but anywhere else it is just stunning.

Input and Output Ports

On the left side of the laptop, there are two USB 2.0 ports, a 4 pin firewire port, the 10/1000 ethernet port, the 4 in 1 Media card reader (SD/MS/MSPRO/MMC), and the Express Card Slot (54mm). The right side has the headphone jack, mic jack, volume control knob, surround sound ports, optical port and a single USB 2.0 port. The backside has the VGA out port, DVI out port, S-Video out port, a single USB 2.0 port, power-in port, the 56K modem, S-Video in, the last the coaxial port.

Left side of the Alienware M9700 (view large image)

Right side of the Alienware M9700 (view large image)

Back side of Alienware M9700 (view large image)

Battery Life

The battery life on this computer is about what I expected for such a big, high performance gaming laptop. The 9700 drains the battery like a fat kid eats ho-hos. I got 1 hour 25 minutes on performance mode, and 1 hour 45 minutes on battery saver mode. As I said before, expect to be tethered to a power outlet! If you are looking for something portable, look else where.

Heat and Noise

The cooling system on the 9700 works very well. I can feel no heat on my hands while typing, a very nice characteristic. However, you could roast a weenie behind the exhaust port of this laptop. It gets quite warm, which is to be expected from a high performance machine.

Noise is kept to a minimum, while running games, the fans are certainly audible, but not annoyingly so. At idle, it is almost silent. There is certainly nothing to complain about.

Conclusion

The Alienware M9700 is a full featured, high performance gaming notebook. It has handled every program I have thrown at it with ease, with only one GPU enabled mind you (Windows Vista does not support SLI graphics yet, a driver will be along shortly). Alienware showed us once again how a gaming notebook should be built through their design and performance. I am going to be a freshman in college come fall, and the 9700 just really seemed like a good choice for me. I have always wanted an Alienware, and the 9700 has not disappointed.

Pros:

  • Gorgeous design
  • Sli technology
  • Stunning screen and resolution
  • The Alienware brand name

Cons:

  • Price
  • Shipping costs
  • Touchpad
  • Battery life on the short side
  • Single core processor

Sony VAIO EC

The Sony brand name is often associated with a premium price tag, but the VAIO E-series laptops are the most affordable notebook PCs available from Sony. The 17-inch VAIO EC, the 14-inch EA and the 15-inch VAIO EB offer mainstream performance and multimedia features for less than $800. Keep reading to take a closer look at the VAIO EC.

Our review unit of the Sony VAIO EC (VPCEC3BFX) has the following specifications:

* Intel Pentium P6100 2.0GHz dual core processor
* Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
* 17-inch LED-backlit display (1600x900)
* ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (512MB)
* 4GB DDR3 (1066MHz) system memory
* 320GB hard drive (5400rpm)
* Blu-ray player/DVD burner
* Bluetooth (2.1 + EDR)
* Ethernet: 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T
* Wi-Fi: 802.11/b/g/n
* Standard Capacity Lithium-ion Battery (5000mAh)
* Dimensions: 16.1(W) x 1.2(H) x 10.7(D) inches
* Weight: 7.3 pounds
* Color: Lava Black
* Starting price: $749

Build and Design
The Sony VAIO EC is a 17-inch mainstream and multimedia laptop from Sony. The E-series notebooks are the most affordable full-featured notebooks in the VAIO product line and you can probably argue that the "E" stands for "Economy class." The laptop body is made of a combination of matte and polished black plastics. All of the plastics feel firm with creaking sounds when you apply pressure to the chassis. That said, given the size of the notebook, those plastics are spread out over such a large area that the notebook exterior bends and flexes under firm pressure. Despite this, we arent too concerned about the overall durability of the chassis ... particularly since this is a desktop replacement that will rarely leave the your desk. The screen hinges offer enough resistance to hold the display in place yet arent so tensioned that opening the laptop is difficult.

The screen lid and notebook base are made of matte plastics while the palmrests and keyboard surround are covered in glossy black acrylic. The overall look is fairly understated, but the end result is a clean design. For better or worse, thats the heart of the VAIO ECs style: clean and simple. This notebook will fit in on your desk in your dorm room, your living room, or your office desk. Just dont expect it to turn too many heads based on looks alone.

Users looking to upgrade or tweak the VAIO EC will find plenty to keep them happy once they look at the bottom of the notebook. Sony engineers were kind enough to include two access panels on the bottom of the chassis that allow you to replace the RAM or the hard drive with whatever you want. Our review unit came with 4GB of system memory (upgradeable to 8GB) and a slow 320GB hard drive (more on that later). Most performance-focused owners will probably want to add more RAM and a faster hard drive or solid state drive (SSD) after purchasing this notebook.

HP ProBook 4425s

The ProBook 4425s is the AMD-variant of the popular small and medium business notebook from HP. Designed as a near carbon copy of its Intel-based siblings, the 4425s features a quad-core Phenom II processor with integrated ATI Radeon 4250 graphics. In this review we find out how well the AMD offering stacks up against its Intel competition.

Our HP ProBook 4425s Specifications:
  • AMD Phenom II P920 Quad Core (up to 1.6GHz, 2MB L2 cache)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (32-bit)
  • 14.0-inch LED-backlit anti-glare HD display (1366 x 768)
  • Integrated ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
  • 4GB DDR3 1066MHz RAM
  • 500GB 7200RPM HDD
  • LightScribe DVD+/-RW Optical Drive
  • Broadcom 4313 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, 1Gb LAN
  • 6-Cell 47WHr Battery
  • Limited 1-year standard parts and labor warranty
  • Dimensions: 13.23 x 9.15 x 1.07-inches
  • Weight: 5.05lbs with 6-cell battery
  • Price as configured: $1,208
Build and Design
The HP ProBook 4425s has a very neat and professional look with brushed metal covers over a plastic body. The panels on this current generation of ProBook are dark copper or bronze in color and can be found on all sizes, including AMD and Intel models. Compared to the first generation models with only plastic showing on the exterior, the newer design looks great and adds strength to the notebook. The brushed metal finish is used throughout the notebook, including the screen cover, palmrest, and speaker grill. To compliment the finish, the surfaces not covered in metal are glossy black plastic, adding another touch of class to this stylish small business notebook.

Build quality is very good and a step up from the older model. The brushed metal lid gives the 4425s some much needed strength and screen protection that the plastic lid on the previous-generation ProBooks lacked. The palmrest and speaker grill show little to no flex under strong pressure, perhaps feeling stronger than the 15-inch or 17-inch siblings. The keyboard tray has some minor flex under pressure which wouldnt be a problem on the more expensive HP EliteBook models. The chassis looks and feels much nicer than the first revision ProBook series, but is just slightly behind business notebooks that use alloy as a primary component.

Users looking to quickly swap out components will be in for a bit of a shock. To access the processor, hard drive, or even the system memory, you need to fully dismantle the ProBook 4425s. On this small and medium business notebook HP opted for centralized support and maintenance, with very little work being done by the end user. In terms of looks this gives the bottom a clean appearance without any access panels, but in terms of difficultly, it adds a lot of work to swap out components. To open the system, you remove four screws underneath the battery, pop off the speaker bezel, remove four additional screws that hold the keyboard in place, slide the keyboard up. This gives you access to the system memory. To get at the hard drive, you remove three more screws that hold the palmrest in place, slide it carefully to the right to release it from its clips. Once that is removed you simply take out three more screws that hold the hard drive in place, and take it out (with four more screws holding it into its cage). To say upgrades on the ProBook are difficult or confusing is putting it lightly.

AMD E 450 and E 300 APUs

  • AMD E-450 and E-300 APUs

Today (the 15th September 2011), AMD released a press release on the AMD E-450 and E-300 APUs. Below is an article written by Godfrey Cheng at the AMD blog.

AMD E-450 and E-300 APUs
It has been nearly a year since AMD demonstrated the development platform for the APU product that we launched as the C and E-Series, a new APU designed for small form-factor notebooks, Ultrathins, and affordable desktop computers. AMD initially shared first looks at this revolutionary series of products with a limited number of press and industry analysts with the AMD E-350 APU as best in the range. AMD made a move that only we could in terms of combining discrete-class graphics with world-class x86, but the distinctive part was the intentional move to focus as much on discrete-class graphics as x86 for a true heterogeneous computing experience. At that time, AMD focused on our great graphics and video for our new and impressive APU. What we did not show was that these APUs also enable great power efficiency and battery life.

AMD double-downed in June by launching our A-Series APUs designed for mainstream and performance computers. The A-Series APU raised the bar on graphics and x86 performance and battery life for mainstream and performance systems, and again, the response has been overwhelming.

We recently launched the AMD E-450 and E-300 APUs, running at 1.65 GHz and 1.3 GHz, respectively. Systems based on the E-450 and E-300 deliver exceptional performance and value. Like systems based on the E-350, they also feature excellent video playback, DirectX 11-capable graphics and extremely power efficient x86 performance.

The AMD APU is revolutionary in many ways but it is important to highlight the significant contribution of power efficiency and battery life for mobile lifestyles. Before the AMD APU, many entry level notebooks did not have great battery life. The AMD E-450 and E-300 enable fantastic mobility and a great computing experience.

AMD provided a video about the AMD E-450 and E-300 APUs on Youtube. You can check it.

What you are seeing in the video are systems powered by the AMD E-450 and E-300, demonstrating that these systems:

  • Offer better battery life than competing systems based on our competitor’s products
  • When looking at scripting software to simulate real world workloads in productivity and gaming, these systems deliver the same or better performance in a more power efficient manner
  • Offer better power efficiency and better platform thermals, which can result in cooler user experience.

Specifications HP EliteBook 2560p :
  • 12.5-inch HD anti-glare 720p (1366x768) with LED backlighting
  • Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
  • Intel Core i5-2410M dual-core processor (2.3GHz, up to 2.9GHz Turbo Boost, 3 MB L3 cache)
  • Intel QM67 chipset

  • Weight: 3.68
  • Dimensions: 12.02 x 8.23 x 1.08 inches
  • 1-year limited warranty
  • Price as configured: $1,819

The HP EliteBook 2560p currently starts at $1,485 for a more standard configuration. Although our model comes equipped with a Intel Core i5-2410M dual-core processor, users have the choice of selecting the Intel Core i7-2620M dual-core processor (2.7GHz clock speed/3.4 maximum Turbo Boost) for an extra $100. Other options include up to 8GB DDR3 RAM at 1333MHz, up to 500GB of hard drive storage space at 7200rpm or a 256GB capacity solid state drive. The only graphics option available is the Intel HD Graphics 3000

Design and build
The 12.5-inch 2560p is designed for business professionals who travel that is smaller and lighter in the family of Compaq laptops and it is built with HP DuraCase. Meaning, this laptop is supposed to stand against bumps, scratches, bumps and falls - and avoiding things like show cracks, broken hinges, and the loss of hard disk data.

The chassis is rugged magnesium alloy support structure as a robust and is designed to protect the top and bottom of the laptop against the elements. The display is layered magnesium and then covered with an anodized aluminum plate.

HP said that this construction is "50 percent stronger than magnesium alone." The palmrests are brushed with an aluminum finish that helps prevent against scratches and the display hinges are made of a metal alloy with a Axel steel shaft.

HP has tested the hinges withstand the power and said that the laptop can be opened and closed ten times every day for six years or 25,000 cycles. Its quite impressive that the laptop still weighs £ 3.68 with all that extra material and the overlay.

When you press down the center of the keyboard, the notebook does not bend under pressure, or palmrests. The display cover is so strong, even if the screen were all made of plastic. The lower part of the world outside the body is also plastic, but feels poorly constructed.

The design has not changed much since last year - it is always covered with black and silver accents and has a very professional look without being boring. In short, money on the black color scheme creates a nice contrast without being too extravagant. The surfaces are as smooth and feels good.

The general construction is exceptionally strong, and the design is pleasing to the eye. Im sure it will withstand years of bumps, bruises and the occasional problem. Speaking of accidents, the 2560p has a shock mounted hard drive (to help prevent data loss in case of a fall) and the keyboard is spill-resistant.

In fact, there is not much to complain at all, but maybe some users would be a little disappointed, or fear that the battery protrudes from the rear. But this is certainly one of the best built, beautifully designed 12-inch laptop that I found.

Ports and Features
As we noted in our first appearance of the latest HP notebook, 2560p is the only notebook on the market an integrated optical drive in the smaller 12.5-inch. Our review model does not have one, but users have the ability to add DVD + /-RW SuperMulti optical drive or DVD-ROM.

Selection methods laptop is quite large. Since this is primarily intended for tourist / business notebooks, not HDMI. It does not have USB 3.0, although given the cost, it should have. What is it, there are three USB 2.0 ports in total (one for charging mobile devices), Smart Card reader, ExpressCard/34, SD / MMC, DisplayPort, eSATA, and openness.

Screen and speakers
HP EliteBook 2560p 12.5-inch anti-glare HD 720p (1366x768) with LED backlight. It has no upgrade options for the display. The screen is lower resolution, but then again most people in the photo / video or change the extensive work with better accuracy is needed while away from the table, then a lower resolution should not be a deciding factor.

Head-on at full brightness, the details of the screen good enough for real work tasks. The horizontal viewing angle is not so good, however, and begins to distort images about 5-10 degrees off center. The vertical viewing angle is much better: the pictures can not begin to deform up to about 25 degrees off center.

The contrast ratio is way low - we measured at 196:1, with a peak luminance of 149 nits in the center. This laptop displays acceptable color contrast for what it is mainly used for.

The 2560p has three speaker grilles located on the front of the notebook. The audio is above average for a notebook of this size with a wide range of volume levels high, medium and low. In a high volume of 2560p should be able to project the appropriate audio output for a presentation or training. At high levels of audio always sounds clear without sounding muffled or distorted.

Well, we had some problems with the location of the speakers. When speakers are placed at the front edge of the laptop instead of on top of the keyboard, the sound reaches the ears too, because the audio is not projected out as it should.

The placement also allowed me to experience the audio playback at high volume palmrests. Its annoying to feel the vibrations from the speakers when playing audio, even in the range of average volume of the speakers to create subtle but noticeable vibration through the palmrests.

Keyboard and touchpad
HP EliteBook 2560p has a Chiclet keyboard style with a spacing between the keys more important to help speed and travel. The keys are flat and have a structured feel to them. Travel and key cast are excellent, it is usually very easy to write with and a very pleasant experience. Support structure of the cabinet prevents the keyboard to flex under heavy pressure to write.

There are many keyboard is involved in 2560p. The first is the light above the keyboard on the screen, click once to open light bulb for use in a dark room, where there is no available light, or in situations where you do not want to bother the person next to you.

This is a small, but bright enough to write by hand in dark places. Other features include pin the mouse to the center of the keyboard, Wi-Fi, the browser will launch and quickly absorbs the keys to the upper right corner, and a fingerprint reader is on the lower right.

The only complaint I have is that the keyboard keys to page up, page down, end and home to set up / down and left / right arrow. Users must press the function key to use them, which can be a turn-off for frequent users of them.

Synaptics touchpad is very low - which means that if you want to move the cursor from one end of the screen to another, it will take longer than usual (even if the pointer speed is very fast). The touchpad surface is very smooth and creates a pleasant experience that is still going to be fun, even when wet fingers.

The size of the touch screen is a problem, but if you turn the pointer speed up that should not be a big problem. That said, the touchpad is above average for notebooks of this size because of its texture, improves its usability.

Performance and Benchmarks
Our Unit Review HP EliteBook 2560p is an Intel Core i5-2410M dual-core processor (2.3 GHz, up to 2.9 GHz Turbo Boost, 3 MB L3 cache), Intel integrated graphics card HD 3000 and 4GB Memory DDR3 1333 System performance is very good, especially in a form factor of this laptop.

Its performance is better than last year 12-inch HP EliteBook 2540p, especially in terms of graphics performance, even if the card is almost a constant in todays mainstream notebook PCs. 2560p is more able to handle multi-tasking activities such as photo / video editing and word processing.

The system can also play videos fine as long as the country is not a graphical environment to high, or 1080p (the graphics simply could not play 1080p, but 720p fine). Toshiba 320GB 7200RPM drive speed is fast, too, and reached just over 110 MB / s peak.

The heat and noise
The 2560p is able to remain calm, although the material was under pressure. The outside temperature reading higher, it was 94 degrees Fahrenheit at the top left and the lowest temperature was 81 degrees. The palmrests remained fine too, around the mid 80s. There was virtually no noise to be heard by the laptop, surprisingly, even when playing a movie in HD.

Battery Life
2560p provides autonomy for our test of the Standard Life. Our review of a notebook 6-cell 62Whr Li-ion, and users have the option of adding 9-cell 100Whr rather than when customizing the battery life even better. In our tests, set the screen brightness up to 70%, in turn activates the Wi-Fi (refresh a page every 60 seconds) and the fact that Windows 7 for the balance of power profile. The laptop was in 7 hours and 45 minutes.

Conclusion
HP EliteBook 2560p is a good choice for mobile professionals. Second-generation Intel Core i5-2410M dual-core processor and 4 GB of RAM will make multi-tasking breeze, and users can do any amount of work the system functions. Another reason for this notebook can run anywhere is that it was able to provide 7 hours and 45 minutes of battery life.

Build quality is exceptional - HP DuraCase chassis with magnesium alloy layers as a support structure will be comfortable when traveling users. This is the type of construction for years, this notebook will most likely need structural repairs for a very long time.

You get what you pay, however, and the price level of $ 1400-1900 sample. The 2560p is also a comfortable keyboard by pressing the scroll speed, but the touchpad is a bit on the small side and become an inconvenience. Also on the downside, the system does not have USB 3.0 Flash faster performance, and when the highest volume users will be able to feel the vibrations through the palmrests.

Sony VAIO Z Review

Full review of Sony VAIO Z

We havent reviewed the Sony VAIO Z laptop yet - the following is a summary based on the hardware in the VAIO Z series.

Summary and Information

The VAIO Z series is one of Sonys premium ultraportable series, and is priced accordingly. Like most VAIOs it comes with a little extra, such as a high-resolution X-BRITE LED-lit screen, a Blu-Ray player and dedicated graphics.

Its neither the thinnest or lightest laptop, like for instance the MacBook Air or the Lenovo X301, but makes up for it by using more powerful hardware. For example, the VAIO Z is equipped with the regular, higher clocked Core 2 Duos, whereas its thinner competition use low-voltage CPUs. It even has a dedicated graphics card to help with the HD media playback and provide some light gaming capability, which is unusual in this weight category.

An optional upgrade that should make this laptop incredibly fast is the dual-SSD RAID configuration. This gives it almost double the performance of the already fast and completely silent Solid State Drive technology. Coincidentally, it also doubles the price tag - but hey, if you want the fastest laptop on the planet, Im sure you dont expect it to be cheap.

Sony VAIO Z Technical Specifications
  • Processor 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile P9500
  • Memory 3GB DDR3
  • Harddrive 2x64GB SSD
  • OS Windows Vista Business
  • Weight 3.31 lbs
  • Screen 13.1
  • Screen resolution 1366 x 768 (WXGA)
  • Graphic Card NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS

Questions about Amazon Kindle Fire

  • Questions about Amazon Kindle Fire

This is a post that I read at the AMD blog and would like to share it with you. Originally written on September 30, 2011 by Pat Moorhead, the post was as follows:-

Unanswered Questions about the Amazon Kindle Fire

Questions about Amazon Kindle Fire
Amazon threw their axe into the tablet sea Wednesday with the launch of the Amazon Kindle Fire. On paper, the Kindle Fire seems like a killer value proposition. For $199, you get continuous computing access to 18 million books, movies, TV shows, music, newspapers, unlimited cloud content storage, and fastest web browsing. And all this at less than half the price of the Apple iPad 2. There are a few important, unanswered questions that could determine whether that deal is too good to be true.

Delivered Responsiveness
Amazon had a great showing at their launch event, but attendees weren’t able to freely touch the tablet themselves. Demos were carefully scripted that showed how good the responsiveness was. I remember how amazingly responsive the TouchPad tablet demos were, only to be disappointed at launch with the lags. The lags were quickly fixed with a patch a few weeks later, but the damage was done. Basic pinch, zoom, page turn, app load and app close must be responsive or it will just feel cheap. Buying a tablet with bad touch is buying a car with a loose steering wheel and a missing tire.

Display Quality on Videos and Photos
At 7”, to effectively see video content at the same size versus a 10” tablet, users must hold it closer to their face. Will we be able to see pixels? Hold the original iPhone close to your face, play a video, and you can see the pixels. That for me could be a deal breaker, but hey, that’s me. At $199, the Kindle Fire is a less considered purchase, but still considered. Heck, consumers return $5 food items because they didn’t like it, so don’t think they wouldn’t return a $199 Kindle Fire if it didn’t do what they expected.

Video Content Quality
I am one of the few people who own a Google TV. While I like the Amazon streaming service, it can get quite pixelated at times. It happens a lot more than it happens on Netflix, too, which leads me to surmise that it’s an Amazon issue. Bandwidth won’t be an issue on the downloaded content, but, again, what about the quality? I have downloaded movies from Amazon Unbox on my laptop and sometimes they are pixelated in spots. My laptop is 1366×768 on a large display and the Kindle Fire has 1024X600 resolutions at 7”, so probability will hopefully be small. The final question is how 16:9 content looks on a 16:10 display. Will there be black blocks on the top or bottom of the display or will the content be zoomed in and possibly blurry?

Software Storage Footprint
With 8GB of storage, users will need to be very choosy with what movies, TV shows, music, games, apps and app content they store on the tablet. So the software storage footprint gets important. For example, if it takes 2GB, that leaves 6GB left for apps and content. The Amazon Cloud storage is great, but who wants to be deleting and re-downloading songs and apps to make room for a downloaded movie or a game that requires a huge, secondary download after install?

Let’s take a look on iTunes at the popular movie “X-Men: First Class”. It packs a 1.79 GB download. While I don’t think the Amazon “portable” version will weigh in at this size, users will still need to think about their storage, and that’s never good.

Silk Web Acceleration
Silk promises many things, and to the user it promises faster web page downloads for a more enjoyable browsing experience. It could, potentially, eliminate any browser compatibility issues with the device and a web page. For example, even if the Silk browser didn’t support [?] the latest or oldest web standards, by pre-rendering certain elements of the page, the user wouldn’t detect a thing, only that they can interact with the web page.

This begs about 100 questions, but I’ll leave that for another analysis. I do have a few I will highlight.

  • Privacy: Amazon knows everywhere I’ve been. Is there a way to opt out? How will it protect my personal information?
  • Standards: Which will it support, which won’t it?
  • Security: Will it capture my passwords?
  • Control: Will user have any kind of control over which sites get “silked” and which ones don’t? I can’t expect Amazon to pre-render every site correctly, particularly the smaller ones.

Conclusion
On paper, the Amazon Kindle Fire appears to provide an exceptional value proposition for the consumer who is on a budget and cannot afford the iPad 2. There are, however, many unknowns that have yet to be determined that could impact the user’s experience. My experience with Amazon is that they under-promise and over-deliver. It’s been that way since their existence. I don’t think they are going to stop that given the importance of Kindle Fire to Amazon. I ordered mine within 5 minutes of the “doors” open up and I’ll hopefully have the answers to these questions above.

Panasonic ToughBook CF H2 Tablet Review Specs

Panasonic Toughbook CF-H2 is only one example. It is truly a tablet in the rugged Panasonic Toughbook traditional, dedicated to those working in the field and requires a device that is not only extremely poartabile, but also reliable and efficient. We get this device, then all solutions have the Toughbook, the chassis of the highest quality magnesium alloy, or anti-shock and stand on the integrity of the hard disk against shock and crash safety.

The tablet is designed for the healthcare and offers a number of specific functions for which they are intended. From an ergonomic point of view is that Panasonic is trying to hold the most weight, in line with force and with the hardware and simple to handle. Toughbook CF-H2 weighs about 15.8 kg and has a rear handle that is simple to handle during use, while the upper grip is used.

The unit also manages to feel a low temperature on the surface without the use of fans, thanks to its unequaled passive cooling system. In addition, to prevent the spread of germs on the camera, the CF-H2 has entered into a smooth surface with knobs and doors and an outer coating material is resistant to disinfectants against specific cleaning with alcohol or another.

Panasonic is also a utility that compresses as a reminder why the program alerts to user-defined intervals, do not forget, the shelf is clean, used also for cleaning. The screen is always one of the strengths of Toughbook products were not here to disappoint. The panel has a diagonal of 101. inches, with most Panasonic transflective technology in practice so that the backlight brighter two-edged sword, because the light is the same as that used in the region. This saves battery and you find the results easier to keep reading.
